Installment of Father Mattingly as Pastor
This Sunday, June 26th, I will officially become pastor of St. Luke & St. Joseph by making a profession of faith and oath of fidelity. I made both of these before my ordination as a deacon and then again as a priest, but the Church requires that I renew them when becoming a pastor. I think she does so not for the priest’s sake, but rather for the people he will serve.
You have a right to be taught the faith of the Church. You have a right to the sacraments of the Church celebrated in the way the Church wishes them to be celebrated. Much harm has been done by priests substituting their own ideals and customs for the churches. The oath of fidelity is my promise to both the Church and you that I will not do so. In other words, I promise to be faithful. I am here to preach the gospel of Jesus Christ, not the gospel of Ryan Mattingly.
